Description

 The Longar drawing workshop invites you to discover this unique technique in 3 hours. You will learn to sculpt illustrations on Longar leaves, using traditional Balinese tools. Then you will apply an old method to bring out your drawings. It is a creative and enriching experience!

Longar is a type of current palm on the Indonesian islands. Like bamboo, the inhabitants use Lontar leaves for artistic basketry and as a thatch. Balinese craftsmen master the art of sculpture on the Longar.

Armed with sharp knives and scissors, they sculpt words and images that come to life, almost like natural ink based on ash. You can learn the old drawing technique on the Longar leaf. Students register illustrations on the sheet using an iron stylus, known as Pangrupak (a small Balinese knife), following preliminary sketches.

Once the illustrations are finished, they blacken the incisions by applying Candlenut Oil burned on the surface of the leaves. After having suffered the excess, the blackened incisions stand out clearly against the color of the sheet.

The whole process is fascinating and easy to understand. It is difficult to imagine a more original and more significant memory!
